The Stony Ground
Welcome to the breadbox, this year I am teaching on the parable of the sower and the seed, found in Matthew chapter 13. This month we will discover some deep truths about the stony ground that causes the seed to be stunned in its growth.
Matthew 13:5-6 “Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.”
The seed did not produce because there was no dept of earth, the roots were not developed and the result was that the seed withered away. How do we get our roots into deep rich soil?
Psalm1:1-3 holds a key for us, as to the soil and dept of our hearts...

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."
One way to keep the soil fresh, is to obey and stay in the word or God, we also need to continue to walk in love and this will enrich our soil . Look at this scripture in Ephesians. Ephesians 3:17 “so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,” If we continue in the word, and continue in God’s love and remain thankful I believe we will not be like the seed in stony ground. Colossians 2:7 “rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
There is more to the stony ground that just a lack of depth and root, when Jesus was asked to expound on this parable He went into a greater explanation in Matthew 13
Matthew `13:20-21 “But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receives it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but endured for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.”
